One of the finest examples of the genre, this work features interesting solo parts for tenor and soprano, a skillfully-crafted, colorful orchestral score, as well as an engaging story line. This play has been translated into many languages and produced around the world, becoming a classic work of dramatic literature. Some of the major directors in the West have directed this play, each interpreting the work differently.
The Drama Theatre in Ekaterinburg first played «The cherry orchard» 20 years ago in a new building on Oktyabrskaya square. One of the unique feature of the performance is stage scenery and costumes.

Mikhail Bulgakov’s 1931 play connects with the grim state of the arts then prevailing in Soviet Russia. By the time of his death in 1940 all his novels had been suppressed, including «The Master and Margarita» by which he is now best known. Few of his short stories remained in print and only one of his plays could be staged.
«Molière» was Bulgakov’s brave attempt to indicate the impossibility of pointing to flaws in a state when it is ruled by a tyrant. For Louis XIV, Molière’s fickle patron, read Stalin, and for Molière himself read Bulgakov and a host of other writers censored, silenced or murdered.

This year Russia celebrates 20 years of the new state. According to traditional historiography, Russia will be 1,150 years old next year. The present-day Russia is grateful to President Yeltsin for the fact that, in the most difficult period, Russian people leading by Boris Yeltsin did not sway from the path of change, continued with a very difficult transformation, and are moving forward today.
The path of the first President of Russia was far from easy, and that is clear today to every citizen of our state. The first President always has to address extremely complex issues and changing public attitudes, and Boris Yeltsin tackled all those challenges.
«Today we have a modern country, a country that is developing and moving forward, though not without problems, and that is the achievement of Russia’s first President Boris Yeltsin and all those who helped him during that period to establish the foundation of the new state. After all, it was then that the foundation was laid upon which our state rests today, as well as the basis for a market economy, although it was a very painful process. Nevertheless, the reforms were carried out, and as a result we have an economy that lives by modern laws. It was then that we built the foundation of the political system and adopted the current Constitution by popular vote, the Constitution of a modern and strong state.»
«The strength of Yeltsin’s character helped our country to go through a very difficult period, to survive in that difficult moment when the foundations of our new state were being laid,» – President Dmitry Medvedev.

Born and raised in the small town of Siena, Italy, Safina grew up in a musical family: his mother was an opera buff and his father an amateur singer. He studied opera as a boy, and was just five years old when he began his training. He paid for lessons by working in his family’s business, a stationery store. At 17 he entered the Conservatorio Statale Musica "Luigi Cherubini" in Florence. He began his operatic career in 1989, performing such classics as La Bohème by Puccini and Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky in Italy and France.
Based in Rome, Safina continues to record and perform in concert. After recording a version of "Your Song" with Elton John for a benefit album, Safina maintained that he had only one major ambition left: singing with the rock band U2. He had already performed U2’s music at his own concerts, including "MLK" (a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.), at a concert in the Netherlands. "It’s the only rock song I sing at my concerts," he told Kate O’Hare in the Buffalo News, "Because I have a special feeling with that song."
Safina was delighted to have found success in both the United States and Europe. As he told USA Today’s Elysa Gardner, "It’s easier for an Italian singer to come to the States and make pizza than pop music. For me to be here with my little Italian pop album—it’s great." Asked if he had a personal motto, he replied to Rosanna Greenstreet in the Guardian, "Follow your dreams."
