Kamensk-Uralsky

Kamensk-Uralsky is located at the junction of the Kamenka and Iset River (Ob basin). The town was given name “Kamensk” after the Kamenka River.

The Kamensky works (“Kamensky zavod”) was founded in 1701 by the order of the Tsar Peter the Great as a settlement next to the ironworks and foundry, launched on the October 15th, 1701. It was the first state foundry in the Ural.

The works was known for its cannons that are considered to be the best in the world. In 1724 the first school for workmen’s children was established. Many of the Kamensky plant’s workmen took part in Yemelyan Pugachev popular uprising.

In 1825–1829 the ironworks underwent reconstruction.

Railway traffic started on December 6th, 1885. In 1935 Kamensk was given the town status. In 1940 was renamed Kamensk-Uralsky.

Industrial production is represented by all industries of national economy: fuel-energy and metallurgical complex, machinery construction, light and food industry, transport and communication. The most progressive and fast-developing industry is metallurgical production, particularly non-ferrous metallurgy, which occupies 69 % of the total volume of industrial production of the town and 12, 9 % of the region.

Kamensk-Uralsky is one of the most fastest-growing towns in the region.

The town now specializes in the production of aluminum and aluminum casting and sheets using bauxites from Severouralsk.

The Ural Aluminum Production Works was the only plant that provided aluminum for the needs of soviet aircraft. After the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) the city industrialization continued due to evacuated plants from west part of the country – mostly metallurgical and machine works. The town became the third by population in the region. In 1949 the Radio producing plant (Production Union “October”, Rus. - Oktyabr) was built. It initiated the development of the electronic production in the town.

There are four main companies in the town – “Sinarsky Pipe Works”, “Kamensk Uralsky Metallurgical Works”, “SUAL-UAZ” and “Oktyabr Factory” and they hold 75% of the total value of industrial production.

“Sinarsky Pipe Works” was established in 1934. As an enterprise putting out steel, stainless and cast iron pipes, woks is recognized as one of the G-7 among the biggest specialized plants in Russia.

“Kamensk Uralsky Metallurgical Works” (KUMW) was founded as a mill of special metallurgy belonging to the Ministry of Aircraft Industry for providing aircraft construction with semi finished products from aluminum and magnesium alloys. Building of the first mill stage was accomplished in 1944. In 1945-1992 the mill has become one of the leading enterprises of the special metallurgy. Realization of restructuring and diversification of the enterprise allowed eliminating unprofitable production lines, mastering the output of new kinds of products, entering the foreign markets, and significantly increasing work efficiency of the mill. In April 2000 Works joined Russian Association of Metal Traders (RAMT).

The first library in town was opened in 1899.

In 1924 the local teacher and student of local history Styazhkin established the Museum of regional studies based on the former building of the iron foundry. This building now is a symbol of the town and one of its architectural monuments.

Other sights may be seen in the center of Kamensk-Uralsky – so-called “Old Kamensk” (Stariy Gorod Kamensk) that was built in XIXth century. It includes the factory bureau, the old-style warehouses (“Magazeynie skladi”) and the factory hospital. The Large Moscow road that was renamed Lenin’s avenue is crossing the “Old Kamensk” district. There, tourists may see the mansion of Vorobyevs, who were famous corn merchants.
